If you work from home, you understand the challenges and benefits of remote work. The idea of being able to have a productive workday without leaving home may have seemed unreal decades ago, but for many, it is now a reality. In the United Kingdom, around 44% of employees work remotely either full-time or in a hybrid model, and 58% of employers offer remote work options. Remote work has become such an integral part of our lives that we now celebrate September 22nd as World Remote Employee Appreciation Day. This day is a testament to the global work culture where 56% of businesses worldwide offer a remote work schedule.

Since 2009, the percentage of people working from home has increased by 159%. And in the UK, 78% of employees say working from home has improved their lives. World Remote Employee Appreciation Day is not just another frivolous day to celebrate. It’s an opportunity to recognize the businesses that offer remote work options and to celebrate the progress we’ve made through technology to make it possible to have the kind of work-life balance that remote work can provide.

When considering the prospect of working from home, it’s natural to assume it’s advantageous in every aspect. However, the reality of working from home is more nuanced. Many UK workers face difficulties with remote work. Studies indicate that 62% of remote workers in the UK struggle due to lack of real-time or asynchronous communication with their colleagues. Those polled in another study indicated that 9% have trouble staying focused, and 11% find it challenging to stay motivated. These are common issues, as are loneliness, feelings of isolation, increased stress, and not knowing when to switch between work and home (and vice versa). However, recognizing these issues gives us opportunities for growth and learning. We can enhance our productivity and overall remote work experience by addressing these challenges. If you work from home and struggle with unclear and undefined work-life boundaries, here are a few tips to increase productivity and your connection to your colleagues.

1. Go Hybrid

Consider adopting a hybrid schedule if working from home full-time isn’t working for you. In the UK, 52% of business leaders believe a hybrid working model is good for productivity, and 58% of employees prefer this schedule. A hybrid work schedule provides the best of both worlds in terms of work-life balance. It allows for productivity while working from both home and the office, with increased productivity being a built-in feature of this model. Additionally, a hybrid schedule saves time on commuting, which can be used to do something valuable on the days you’re not traveling to work.

2. Don’t Forget to Log Off

Working from home takes the concept of bringing work home to another level. It’s easy to keep working well into the evening or night when you’re at home, working, and in your groove. That’s why it’s important to be mindful that you’re working at home and set boundaries. Having a set work-from-home schedule is key. If your team allows for flexibility about when to log on to get started with your work, consider setting a timer to let you know when you need to log off and enjoy being home. One thing to note about productivity is that the more you work, the less productive you are. Breaks are necessary, and so is balance.

3. Dress the Part

Working in your pajamas can be distracting. Pajamas are designed for comfort and can create a psychological connection with relaxation, which might make it harder to focus on work. Dressing for success is known to be effective when taking a test or wanting to feel more confident. So, it’s a good idea to consider your work attire and dress for the office, even if you’re just going to another room in your home. When you feel good, you’re more likely to do good work. Therefore, when working from home, consider wearing clothing that motivates you to be productive.

4. Find Ways to Strengthen Your Digital Connection

Connecting with colleagues is important whether you’re working from home or in the office. Whether it’s through in-person meetings, video calls, or emails, personalize your interactions – especially your digital ones. Start by asking open-ended questions and by showing sincere interest in their day. Humanize your connection by mentioning the weather or something personal. And, of course, celebrate your colleagues’ successes and recognize them whenever possible. When you interact with your colleagues virtually, be mindful of ways to strengthen your digital bond – it can help make working alone seem less lonely.
