Today is July 1st, and on this day, our team in Canada celebrates Canada Day. Similar to how Americans celebrate July 4th, Canadians celebrate Canada Day to mark the anniversary of their independence and the unification of territories. Originally named Dominion Day, on July 1st, 1867, the British North America Act was passed, uniting the three colonies (the United Canadas, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick) into one dominion within the British Empire, which later became Canada. In 1982, when the Canadian constitution reclaimed its constitutional power from the United Kingdom, July 1st was officially renamed Canada Day.
Canada Day is a festive holiday celebrated by millions across the country and abroad. It presents an excellent opportunity for businesses to join in on the celebrations, which include concerts, fireworks, cookouts, and time with family and friends. Major Canadian cities such as Ottawa, Vancouver, and Toronto will host big holiday events, providing businesses in those areas with the perfect chance to showcase Canadian pride and take advantage of numerous sales opportunities.
Canada Day presents a great opportunity for businesses with a retail store to interact with customers in person and familiarize them with the brand, whether they are potential or existing customers. Holidays are the prime time for retail since in-store sales representatives can deliver a superior shopping experience and excellent customer service that online businesses cannot replicate.
If your business wants to celebrate Canada’s birthday but you don’t know where to start, here’s your guide to wishing our home and native land a happy birthday.
Have a BBQ
Many celebrate Canada Day with a backyard barbecue. It’s a time for families to get together with friends and make fun memories. For your business, consider having a barbecue for your employees or for your in-store team and customers as well. Partner with a local barbecue food truck or restaurant. The food provided could be for sale or as part of a contest.
Host a party
Everyone loves a good party. Why not host a Canada Day party at your store? Hire a DJ to play some of Canada’s well-known artists, such as Celine Dion, Drake, Justin Bieber, and Shania Twain. The festive music and mood at your store can attract customers because they match the energy of the day.
Offer a discount
Who doesn’t love a good sale? Consider having a Canada Day sale on selected items on the day of or in the week leading up to the big day. This promotion will help attract customers to your store with an irresistible sale.
Dress the part
Consider having your team all wear Canadian colors, red and white with the maple leaf, in honor of the day. Decorate your store in the same colors and have flags around to let everyone know you’re excited about Canada Day, too. This is a fun way to celebrate and be festive at the same time. Customers who visit your store may also be wearing the same colors, creating an automatic connection, which is a great way for businesses to strengthen their brand image.
